Abstract

This paper seeks to conceptualize architectural resilience across its four typologies — functional, structural, technical, and robust — and to elucidate the role of advanced construction technologies in operationalizing it to achieve sustainability. The research problem emerges from the inadequacy of conventional buildings to adapt to accelerated environmental, technological, and social transformations.

Methodology: The study employs a descriptive-analytical approach, based on the analysis of 45 references (2017–2024) and an examination of ten leading international case studies. The analysis focused on three core axes: adaptability, transformation and expansion, and post-shock recovery. The case studies were assessed through quantitative and qualitative analysis, with resilience evaluated via a bespoke assessment matrix.

Results: The matrix revealed that genuine resilience is achieved through the integration of the three dimensions, culminating in robust resilience. St. Mary's Hospital scored 4.75/5 as the most robust model, capable of operating for 36 hours off-grid, while The Edge and The Crystal (4.5/5) demonstrated the highest technical efficiency, achieving 40% energy savings. Furthermore, the models confirmed that Base Isolation systems reduce seismic damage by 50%.

Conclusion: The paper recommends the adoption of the free plan principle, demountable systems, and the integration of smart systems from the early design stages, alongside the incorporation of resilience criteria into the Libyan Building Code. It concludes that the higher the degree of resilience, the lower the need for demolition and reconstruction..
