Psychological Pain in Chronic Diseases: A Comparative Study among Patients with Chronic Heart Failure, Cancer Patients Receiving Chemotherapy, and Renal Failure Patients Undergoing Dialysis

This study aimed to assess the level of psychological distress, including depression, anxiety, and stress, among patients with chronic heart failure, cancer undergoing chemotherapy, and renal failure receiving hemodialysis, and to examine differences in psychological distress across these clinical groups. A comparative descriptive design was adopted, and a purposive sample of patients was selected according to predefined inclusion and exclusion criteria. Psychological symptoms were assessed using the Depression, Anxiety and Stress Scale (DASS-21)
The findings indicated high levels of psychological distress across all three dimensions among patients with heart disease, cancer, and renal failure. Depression recorded the highest level, followed by stress and anxiety. Statistically significant differences in psychological distress were found according to sex, illness duration, marital status, and educational level. Higher levels of psychological distress were observed among males, patients whose illness duration was less than two years, unmarried participants, and those with primary-level education.
The study recommends integrating psychological assessment and support into routine healthcare services for patients with chronic diseases, implementing regular psychological screening for the early detection of psychological symptoms, and strengthening the role of mental health professionals within multidisciplinary healthcare teams. Further comparative studies are recommended to enhance understanding of psychological distress among patients with chronic illnesses.
