Abstract

A pot experiment was conducted at the Faculty of Agriculture, Sirte University, Libya during 2022/2023 to study the effect of irrigation water salinity (NaCl) on vegetative growth traits of local barley (cv. Rehan) under different concentrations. Barley seeds were sown in pots and treated with four salinity levels (0, 50, 100, 150 mM) during the period from 13 November to 17 April. The experiment was laid out in a Completely Randomized Design (CRD).

Results indicated that plant traits including plant height, number of leaves, spike length, fresh and dry weight of vegetative parts, and dry weight of spike decreased with increasing salinity levels. Plant height decreased from 22.50 cm to 13.36 cm at 150 mM with a reduction of 40.6%, and spike dry weight decreased from 0.32 g to 0.09 g with a reduction of 71.8%. Similarly, fresh weight decreased from 10.5 g to 4.2 g, and dry weight from 1.13 g to 0.46 g with reductions of 60% and 59.6%, respectively. No significant difference was observed between control and 50 mM.
