Abstract

Materials management is one of the fundamental factors influencing the success of construction projects, as it directly affects project cost, execution time, and overall performance. Transportation activities represent a critical component of construction logistics due to their significant impact on procurement costs and resource utilization efficiency. This study investigates the application of the transportation model in linear programming to minimize the supply cost of ready-mix concrete in construction projects through a case study of Al-Maidan Mosque Project in Al-Zawiya City, Libya.

The study employed descriptive, analytical, and quantitative approaches. Data were collected from four ready-mix concrete suppliers operating in Al-Zawiya City, including production capacities, supply costs, and project demand requirements for foundations, columns, and slabs. A balanced transportation matrix was developed, and transportation problem-solving techniques, including the North-West Corner Method and the Least Cost Method, were applied to identify the most cost-effective supply plan.

The results demonstrated that the transportation model significantly reduces supply costs compared with the conventional procurement strategy based on a single supplier. The traditional supply cost amounted to LYD 431,500, while the cost decreased to LYD 255,225 using the North-West Corner Method and to LYD 249,895 using the Least Cost Method, achieving a total saving of LYD 181,605. The findings confirm the effectiveness of linear programming models as decision-support tools for improving resource management and logistics planning in construction projects.

The study recommends the adoption of operations research techniques and linear programming models in planning procurement and transportation activities, as well as expanding the use of quantitative decision-support tools within the construction sector.
