The prevalence of work-related musculoskeletal disorders (WRMDs) among hospital workers is increasing day by day, making them a major cause of musculoskeletal injuries, absenteeism, and reduced productivity in delivering effective therapeutic sessions. This study aimed to determine the prevalence of work-related musculoskeletal disorders among physiotherapists at Zawiya Medical Center during the past 12 months, to identify the most common injuries within this specialty, and to determine the most frequent risk factors associated with these injuries. The study also aimed to explore the different coping mechanisms used by physiotherapists in the workplace to deal with these disorders
A descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted between October and December 2025. A self-reported questionnaire was distributed to 202 physiotherapists working at Zawiya Medical Center. The questionnaire consisted of 17 questions covering personal and professional history. The results showed that 69% of physiotherapists experienced musculoskeletal disorders in one or more body regions. The most affected areas were the lower back, followed by the neck and shoulder. The main risk factors associated with these injuries were performing repetitive tasks and maintaining static postures for prolonged periods.
Regarding coping mechanisms, some participants reported relying on their professional experience, while others sought medical assistance to alleviate their injuries. Others preferred rest or performing exercises. Based on the findings of this study, physiotherapists at Zawiya Medical Center in Zawiya City have a high prevalence of work-related musculoskeletal disorders resulting from the nature of their profession.
