Exception in Arabic Between Grammatical Rule and Linguistic Application: A Descriptive Analytical Study

Abstract

This research examines exception in Arabic between grammatical codification and linguistic usage, as one of the grammatical topics that has attracted considerable attention in both classical and modern Arabic linguistic studies. This is due to its variety of particles and structures, its diverse grammatical rules, and the interaction between the principles established by Arab grammarians and the requirements of actual linguistic usage in different contexts. The study aims to investigate the nature of the relationship between grammatical rules and linguistic application in the domain of exception, and to determine the extent to which grammatical codification corresponds with authentic linguistic evidence, while identifying the major instances in which discrepancies may arise between established grammatical rules and actual usage.

The research adopts a descriptive-analytical approach by examining grammatical rules related to exception and analyzing selected examples from Qur’anic, Prophetic, poetic, and prose texts. These examples are compared with the grammatical principles established by Arab grammarians in order to determine the extent to which the rules correspond with actual linguistic usage. The analysis demonstrates that the phenomenon of exception cannot be fully understood solely within the framework of abstract grammatical rules. Rather, it requires consideration of linguistic and semantic contexts, the diversity of usage patterns, and the various contextual clues that contribute to determining both grammatical function and intended meaning.

The study concludes that grammatical codification provides an essential framework for regulating and organizing linguistic phenomena. However, authentic Arabic usage reveals a degree of flexibility and diversity that cannot always be fully accommodated by rigid grammatical rules. This highlights the importance of achieving a balance between transmitted linguistic evidence (samāʿ) and analogy (qiyās), as well as between grammatical rules and actual usage. Linguistic exceptions should not necessarily be regarded as deviations from the grammatical system; rather, they should be viewed as an integral part of the richness of Arabic and the breadth of its expressive system. The study recommends reexamining grammatical rules in light of actual linguistic usage and employing modern descriptive and analytical approaches in the study of grammatical phenomena, thereby contributing to a more comprehensive understanding of the relationship between grammatical codification and linguistic usage.
