Totemism in Human Societies

This study examines totemism as one of the oldest religious, social, and cultural phenomena in human societies. It aims to clarify its concept, trace its origins, and analyze its role in organizing the lives of early communities. It presents the main interpretations proposed by nominalist, sociological, and psychological theories, highlighting the views of anthropologists and sociologists such as Frazer, Durkheim, Freud, and Lévi-Strauss. The study also discusses the laws and taboos associated with the totem, including prohibitions against killing or eating it and the obligation to respect it as a sacred symbol of the clan. It demonstrates that totemism was not merely a religious belief or primitive superstition, but performed significant functions in defining identity and belonging, regulating kinship and marriage, strengthening social solidarity, and governing the relationship with nature. The study concludes that totemism represented an early form of legislation and social organization, whose symbolic traces remain evident in contemporary tribal and national emblems.
