Between smart computing and physical risks: A study on the awareness of Computer Science students at Abu Aissa College of Education regarding the electromagnetic radiation emitted by smart devices.

Abstract

The research aims to study the level of awareness among female students in the Computer Department at Abu Aissa College of Education, Al-Zawiya University, regarding the physical risks associated with exposure to electromagnetic fields emitted by smart devices. The study adopted a descriptive method and included all female students from different academic years, with data collected thru a google form during the spring semester of 2026. The results showed that the smartphone was the most used device, with intensive daily use ranging between 3-7 hours, and the focus of use was on academic and research activities, followed by social media activities. The results also showed that the majority of participants had a basic scientific understanding of electromagnetic radiation concepts, recognized the emission of these radiations from smart devices, and had sufficient knowledge of their potential health risks. A significant percentage reported experiencing health symptoms associated with their use, while most of them followed some preventive measures to reduce exposure to these non-ionizing radiations.
Moreover, the majority of respondents confirmed the importance of enhancing awareness of physical risks within the college by integrating relevant concepts into the curricula and developing awareness programs and workshops. The results indicated a good level of general awareness; however, they emphasize the need to adopt sustainable educational and awareness strategies that contribute to enhancing scientific knowledge and establishing preventive practices that support the safe and responsible use of smart devices
