تُعد جودة مياه الشرب أحد المحددات الأساسية للصحة العامة والنمو السليم خلال مرحلة الطفولة، نظرًا لما تتسم به هذه المرحلة من تسارع في النمو الجسدي والعصبي والمعرفي، وما يصاحب ذلك من قابلية متزايدة للتأثر بالملوثات البيئية. ولم تعد المخاطر المرتبطة بتلوث المياه مقتصرة على الأمراض المنقولة بالمياه، بل تشير الأدلة العلمية إلى ارتباط التعرض لبعض الملوثات الكيميائية والبيولوجية باضطرابات قد تشمل الحالة التغذوية والنمو الجسدي والوظائف العصبية والمعرفية والسلوكية لدى الأطفال.
